AAC equipment and specialised assistive products can be extremely expensive, particularly when they must be imported. Speak 2 Me explores practical ways to make communication and play more accessible by developing affordable local solutions and adapting suitable everyday products.
Sometimes this means creating a product from scratch. At other times, it means finding an ordinary toy or device with potential and modifying it so that it can be operated more easily by someone with limited movement or a different access need.
Switch-Activated Toys
Many battery-operated toys require small buttons, switches or movements that may be difficult for some users. Where possible, Speak 2 Me can modify suitable toys for switch-activated operation.
A switch-adapted toy can allow the user to operate it through a larger or more accessible external switch. This can support:
- Independent and inclusive play
- Understanding of cause and effect
- Turn-taking and shared activities
- Choice-making
- Participation in therapy or learning activities
- Greater control over the immediate environment
The most appropriate switch and positioning will depend on the individual’s movement, access needs and abilities.
Remote-Control Modifications
Small buttons and controls can make remote-controlled toys and devices difficult to operate. Speak 2 Me can explore modifications such as adding handle extensions or enlarging control points to make them easier to reach, grip or press.
Each modification is considered according to the user’s abilities and the construction of the device. The aim is to create a practical solution that improves access while keeping operation as simple as possible.
Locally Made Solutions
Speak 2 Me is also exploring the manufacture of selected communication and access products to reduce costs for local AAC users and their families.
Locally developed products may offer a more affordable alternative to imported equipment while allowing solutions to be adapted to the realities and needs of South African users.
Products and modifications may include:
- Switch-accessible toys
- Adapted controls
- Handle or button extensions
- Communication boards and supporting materials
- Simple access aids
- Individually designed practical solutions
Available products will depend on current development, materials and the individual requirements of each user.
Have an Idea?
Families, therapists, educators and carers are welcome to approach Speak 2 Me with an item or modification idea.
Sonja will consider the user’s needs, the intended purpose and the construction of the item before discussing whether the modification appears possible. Not every product can be adapted safely or successfully, but each request will be considered individually.
Important Information About Client-Supplied Items
Modifications to client-supplied toys and devices are undertaken on a best-effort basis. Even new toys can contain extremely thin wiring, fragile components or poorly constructed circuit boards. These internal issues are not always visible before the item is opened and may cause it to stop working during or after modification.
For this reason, Speak 2 Me cannot guarantee that a client-supplied item will remain operational or that every requested modification will be successful. Clients will be informed of the proposed modification and potential risks before work begins.
Where possible, families may be advised to use a lower-cost or replaceable item for experimental adaptations.
Practical Solutions for Greater Participation
The purpose of manufacturing and modification is not simply to change a toy or device. It is to give individuals more opportunities to make choices, participate in activities, play independently and interact with the people around them.
Speak 2 Me approaches each project with creativity, care and a focus on developing a solution that is useful in everyday life.
